Tools & Compilers Research and Development Internship

Jane Street is offering a research-focused internship for PhD and Master’s students within its Tools and Compilers group in London. This opportunity is designed for students with strong academic research backgrounds in programming languages, compilers, verification, and related technical fields. Over a 10 to 12-week placement, interns will work closely with experienced mentors on advanced compiler and tooling projects related to large-scale production systems. The internship provides exposure to research-led engineering challenges, open-source development, and the technologies supporting one of the world’s leading quantitative trading firms.

About Jane Street

Jane Street’s Compilers team works on improving OCaml as a foundation for the firm’s growing technology stack, in collaboration with the wider OCaml community. The team focuses on helping developers express ideas more effectively in OCaml, improving generated code performance, and making the compiler itself faster and easier to use.

Over time, the group has extended the OCaml type system with new language features, redesigned the optimiser, introduced feedback-directed optimisation, and developed tools for profiling, debugging, documentation, and build automation. Much of the work produced by the team is open-source and contributed back to the wider OCaml ecosystem.

The Role

During the internship, you will work with mentors on a research project aligned to your academic expertise and interests. Projects may involve compiler optimisation, testing and validation, type systems, or related tooling and infrastructure challenges.

You’ll gain practical experience applying advanced research concepts within a large and actively developed production codebase while learning how OCaml is used across Jane Street’s systems and engineering workflows.

  • Contribute to research and development projects within the Tools and Compilers group
  • Collaborate with experienced engineers and researchers on technical challenges
  • Work on compiler, optimisation, verification, or tooling-related problems
  • Apply state-of-the-art research ideas to production systems
  • Gain exposure to internal libraries, tooling, and development workflows
  • Participate in technical discussions, educational sessions, and team events

Company Culture

Jane Street promotes a collaborative and research-oriented environment where engineers and researchers work closely together on technically challenging problems. Interns are encouraged to explore new ideas, contribute to open-source initiatives, and engage with experienced mentors throughout the internship.

The internship also offers access to educational resources, guest speakers, and social events designed to provide insight into the company’s working environment and long-term career opportunities.
